Equilibrium

Equilibrium is a terminal state.
A system at equilibrium has no gradient left. No difference in temperature, in pressure, in concentration. Nothing further can occur. Physics calls this heat death, and the word is exact.
What holds a form holds it by dissipating. A sung note lasts as long as the breath feeds it; the moment the breath stops, it does not fade, it ceases.
Between rigidity and disorder lies a narrow condition in which a form sustains itself without seizing and without dissolving. It is not reached once and for all. It is held.
Three regimes. A field where no scale dominates, and where no border can settle anywhere. Two regimes occupying the same space without merging, held apart by what keeps circulating between them. A limit that advances and holds at the exact threshold where it could as easily seize as come undone.
Three ways for a form to stand there. What separates them is not time but a threshold.

Nothing that appears in these images was contained in what produced them.

The Conceptual Framework
Equilibrium as a terminal state.
A system at equilibrium has no gradient left, therefore no work is possible and no spontaneous transformation. This is the physical definition of heat death. A form that persists therefore never does so through stability: a continuous flow passes through it, and it exists during that passage. This is what Prigogine called a dissipative structure, a way of being rather than a procedure.
Equilibrium is a terminal state. What holds its form holds it by dissipating.
The narrow condition.
A system too stable damps every disturbance and seizes into a repeating pattern. A system too unstable lets everything diverge and dilutes into homogeneous noise. Between the two lies a condition in which a disturbance may as easily grow as subside, depending on barely different circumstances. There, and only there, does new form keep appearing.
Three regimes, no order.
These are three conditions in which a system can hold, not three moments of a passage. A system may move between them in either direction, and what separates them is a threshold, not a duration. None is an ending, none leads to the others.
Form is in no single element.
It is not in the model, nor in the structure of the prompt, nor in any single image, nor in the selection taken alone. It appears at the level of the whole loop, where something circulates and where, at each turn, only part of it is kept. The structure of the relations determines what appears, more than the nature of the elements that compose it.
